Object description :

"Small Writing Table Stamped By Jean François Hache; Hache Fils à Grenoble"
Rare small living room table, neoclassical stamped Hache fils à Grenoble inlaid with dexterity of beech, walnut, and sycamore of thread and burl, all treated natural or tinted on cherry wood frame; geometric cartridges of diamond and round medallions embellished with ebony nets with Greek-style offset, cut off with discs on all its visible sides, top included. This small rectangular plan billet-doux table, on the front, opens with two wide drawers surmounted by a sliding tablet sheathed in morocco, as well as another on the right, all and all in Alpine pine fonçure. The latter, compartmentalized with three compartments intended for the inkwell, the compact and the sponge box, recalls its dual function: writing table and chiffonier. Those on the front are provided with keyholes while the side and the shelf have a pull lens, all in gilded bronze. The exposed crosspieces devoid of ornaments contribute to the decorative geometry while lightening it. The set rests on a four-sided square-section sheath base with a deep central groove on each of their faces. The stamp of Jean-François Hache: Haches son in Grenoble is struck on the edge of the side drawer. It should be noted that a trace of label remains under the zipper. In the 1770s, Jean-François Hache introduced the neoclassical style to Dauphiné. Its ornaments then borrow from geometry: cubes, rectangles, circles and, above all, inimitable ovals encrusted with tinted sycamore burls or moiré beech. Gradually during this decade, anxious to follow the new taste, he will evolve his production from the fluid and curved forms of the Louis XV style to the sobriety of the lines of the neoclassicism of that of Louis XVI; our charming little table is the perfect example. Anxious to preserve the integrity of this table, old locks and key have been preserved but unfortunately these are defective; any time we can, at your request, remedy this. Dimensions: height 73.3cm – width 42.2cm – depth 32.4cm. Jean-François Hache, the eldest of Pierre Hache, was born in Grenoble on January 10, 1730, and became cabinetmaker to Duke Louis-Philippe d'Orléans, Governor General of Dauphiné. For nearly thirty years, this master operated large workshops and stores located on Place Claveyson, and gave a great boost to his business. He executed furniture remarkable for the perfection of their assemblies and for the original character of their marquetry, for which he mainly used burls or native tree roots, sometimes used natural, sometimes dyed in very vivid colours. Many of its productions are kept in the families of Dauphiné. These pieces are marked HACHE FILS A. GRENOBLE, and sometimes dated by a handwritten inscription. Some also carry, under their marble tablet or in a drawer, a printed label giving the list of the many kinds of works made by their author. Several variants of these advertisements are known. Bibliography: The Ax dynasty by René Fonvielle, Dardelet Grenoble edition – Ax cabinetmaker in Grenoble from the Dauphinois museum Glénat edition – The Ax cabinetmakers of Grenoble by Jean-Michel Giroud and Edmond Delaye Didier and Richard edition of 1931.
