The Baccarat crystal factory was founded in 1816 by the financier and industrialist Aimé-Gabriel d'Artigues (1773-1848) on the site of the former Sainte-Anne glass factory. In 1764, King Louis XV gave permission to the Bishop of Metz, Louis-Joseph de Montmorency-Laval, to create a glass factory on his land in Baccarat.
