Once again our curiosity will not be satisfied! Despite a precise and delicate brushstroke, a well-studied and very lively composition, a sense of detail sometimes full of humor (did you notice the dog in the bottom left corner of the painting, the wagging tail and the enticing nose by the content of the net of the lady in the navy skirt?), our painter has disappeared from memory and this painting seems to be the only one by his hand in circulation... which is as surprising as it is disappointing! So let's stick to the scene instead.
The dress of ladies and gentlemen indicates that we are at the turn of the century, perhaps even in the first years of the 20th century, in any case before 1914. in September, prunes invaded the markets, the quays of the port on the Garonne , the streets of the Agen city. Look at these large white canvas bags, they contained 50 kg of Ente plums, or dried prunes. During the harvest, which took place in August, the plums were picked up by hand and placed in wooden baskets. They were then exposed for a few days on a bed of thick straw or racks, called coufidous, in full sun, before undergoing three successive firings in bread ovens. The prunes came out with a soft flesh with a beautiful shiny black appearance. The prunes were then spread out in the attics, on large sheets before being placed in 50 kg canvas bags and sold on the markets.
