Machete (kattî) Tamil from Reunion used for the sacrifices of "Atharva Veda" goats in the Hindu religion, late 19th century.
According to popular belief, the act of beheading by its insertion in the sacrificial act acquires a sacred character, because the sacrifice renders non-violent what would be violent outside of it. The sacrificed goats are then prepared as a dish, with their various limbs. Five dishes will be offered to the Gods, then shared between the faithful during a common meal. The sacrifice of the goats is propitiatory, it helps to ward off cataclysms, truly ensures the benevolence of the Gods here below.
