Circular low relief in reconstituted marble depicting Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairy people from A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare, dated 1848. This is a very beautiful representation after Edward William Wyon ( 1811-1885) British painter well known for his busts and portraits, sculptor and engraver renowned heir to a long dynasty of engravers-engravers. Some of his works were intended for reproduction by Wedgwood. The characters represented here are the protagonists of A Midsummer Night's Dream, a play written in 1595 by William Shakespeare belonging to the series of "Faieries" by the great English Renaissance playwright. The play recounts the thwarted loves of two pairs of lovers in ancient Greece during a summer night in the forest. The amorous adventures of our heroes intertwine with another sentimental intrigue being played out between the king and the queen of the fairies. The characters of Puck and Bottom bring humor and madness to this fabulous play. Our bas-relief is in good general condition, some égrenures are however to be noted. It is presented in a rear frame in wood and stucco in the Louis XVI style, cracked old gold finish. A wax medallion representing a cupid is encrusted on the back of the medallion.
