Object description :

"Dutch Portrait Of The 17th Century - Around 1640"
This stunning portrait features one of the most accurate and delicate renderings of lace and jewels we have ever seen in portraits of the 17th century. The artist was clearly very talented and invested a lot of time in creating this true treasure of a painting (for example; he lace was painted in a very delicate but also time-consuming manner many other artists of the period would have painted this in a less detailed but faster way often resulting in a very "flat" looking fabric). The work has an old attribution to Jacob Delff (with Christie's in the 1980s), but Dr. Fred Meijer believes that it was created by Paulus Hennekin given they highly detailed rendering of the lace. A very similar portrait of a lady, also attributed to Hennekin, was exhibited at the TEFAF art fair in 2002 (it's registered in the Rkd under number 48497).

The quality and condition are exquisite which is very rare for works of the period as they were all painted thinly and many have suffered during the course of time. Please have look at other paintings from the period and compare the details, many works will pale in comparison. The panel measures ca 67.5 * 56cm and with the frame 81 * 70cms
