Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827/1875) was born in Valenciennes, he is in Paris in 1838 and learns drawing and sculpture at the School of Decorative Arts. Student of the Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1844 with François Rude as teacher, his talent was rewarded with a Rome Prize in 1854 and resided at the Villa Medici in 1856.
