Object description :

"Two Bazu-band"
Two complete arm guards with their inner linings and gauntlets. Telling from the craftsmanship and decorations it can be assumed that these are probably from Sudan. For much of 19th century the region was under sixty-four year 'al-Turkiya' rule. The influence of Ottoman and Persian arms can still be seen in the many copies of axes, maces, mail armour and helmets. The bi-colour scroll koftgari decorations on these arm guards are consistent with artwork found on Sudanese axe blades. Engraved geometric panels. Inner and outer guards are connected via iron wire instead of rings. The interiors are lined with padded fabrics ending in a gauntlet. (palm retaining straps absent) Condition is very good considering these are African pieces. The scroll work on the outer guards is very faint. Both arm guards measure 37cm or 54cm with the gauntlet. See pictures.
