# Tsumugi kimonos (silk pongee) are elegant, very popular, sometimes luxurious and belong to the category of so-called "woven" kimonos (orimono), which implies that the silk thread has been dyed before being woven (there are however exceptions), unlike kimonos made from a white fabric and subsequently dyed (komon, hômongi ...). The patterns are outlined in uninterrupted continuity by the seams. The followers of this kind of fabrics are true connoisseurs. During the Edo period (1603-1867), the different social classes were subject to severe rules even in the way of dressing. Indeed, silk was reserved for the nobility and warriors. However, sericulturalists began to manufacture fabrics for their own use from medium-quality silk threads, which were impossible to market. These fabrics, which showed irregularities on their surface and which did not resemble silk at all (but rather cotton) were then highly prized by the lower classes (merchants, bourgeois) who, thanks to this ingenuity, then had the possibility of wearing in peace a material which was forbidden to them.
Nowadays, the tsumugi kimono is considered as an ordinary garment since it is strongly discouraged to wear it during an official event, a tea ceremony or a party (except however for the tsumugi united to a coat of arms). There are three categories of tsumugi kimonos:
● the most refined and luxurious fabrics with traditional patterns cut out and for which hand-spinning and weaving (about 11 m) requires several months of work like the Yuki tsumugi, Oshima tsumugi ..., named after their region of origin. These traditional techniques have acquired great value and such kimonos have become very popular. The prices here reach those of high fashion clothing.
● fabrics with a coarser and more irregular appearance (due to imperfections in the silk thread) and whose patterns are dominated by stripes and checks. These characteristics make it an easy to wear and elegant garment: Yonezawa tsumugi, Ueda tsumugi ....
● united tsumugi decorated with a coat of arms and formerly reserved exclusively for people of a certain age are now very popular with the youngest because of the on their practical side.
