Born in 1854, Gabriel Biessy began at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon as a pupil of Félix Clément before d ' enter the studio of Carolus-Duran in Paris in 1879. He sent his first portraits to the Salon in 1882 then undertook a series of trips to Holland, Portugal, Senegal and especially South America. Traveling painter, he ended his career as Director of Fine Arts in Cairo. He mainly painted portraits, views of Paris or American and Parisian genre scenes, representing the life of his time with a preference for nocturnal scenes.
