Ludovic-Rodo PISSARRO (1878 - 1952)

"The Bridge in Normandy"

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right and dated 1899

Ludovic-Rodo Pissarro is the fourth son of the painting Camille Pissarro. Encouraged at a very young age and supported by his father, he used all the techniques of his artistic creation: engraving, drawing, watercolor, painting ... He frequented thanks to his father other artists including Theo Van Rysselberghe, Kees Van Dogen and Maximilian Luce. At the age of 16, he made his first woodcuts in the anarchist newspaper "Le Père Painard".

In 1898, he moved to a studio in Montmartre with his brother Georges Manzana. They will frequent the emblematic places of the capital: cabarets, bars and cafes which he will realize many works. He made several trips to London and the Netherlands before participating in 1905 in the first exhibition of Fauve painters at the Salon des Independants. During the First World War, he leaves to find his brother Lucien and offers us a satirical vision of the War. On his return in 1919 to France, he founded with the brothers Georges Manzana and Lucien and the painter Théo Van Russelberghe Monarro group which Claude Monet is the president. This group aims to expose contemporary artists who are inspired by the Impressionism movement. In addition, he also worked on his father's catalog raisonné, which he published in 1939 as a two-volume catalog.

This rare work of the artist Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro, made in 1899, in an impressionist style is in line with the compositions of his father, the painter Camille Pissarro, and with whom he first studied painting.

The work is luminous because of the use of unmixed colors and a clear palette in order to recreate the light and its effects on the landscape. The quick touch and finely realized, shows us the will to capture instantly a specific moment during the day.

This work represents a view of a bridge in Normandy, certainly in the vicinity of Clecy or Andélys. It may be a view of the Pont du Vey in Clécy where his brother Paul Emile used to paint the surroundings and many of the children have done in painting.

We can reconcile our work, the only other table known today and made by the artist on this date, entitled "Village Street", went on sale December 16, 2015 at Binoche and Giquello.

Size: 46 x 38 cm without frame and 60.5 x 52.5 cm with its gilt wood frame Louis XV style
