Hendrik Tavenier was born in Haarlem and was taught by the decorative painter Jan Augustini, who specialised in ‘behangselschilderingen’, large-scale wall hangings. In 1759 he had settled as an independent master and became a member of the Haarlem guild of St Luke. He specialised in landscapes in watercolour, many with topographical subjects, such as the present work. This is a rare view of the village of Nootdorp, near The Hague.
