Garden Stool, Kawamoto Hanusuke VI (1844-1905), Japan, Seto, Meiji Period, Late 19th Century

Garden stool / seat in the shape of a drum. Hand-painted in cobalt underglaze: pine branches, plum blossoms, various plants and a crab. Decorated with an ornamental frieze on the base and the finial. The whole is bordered by a thick "cordon" of porcelain.

Kawamoto Hanusuke - a family of ceramists, Kawamoto Hanusuke IV (?-1857) was a fourth generation ceramist working in the Seto region, he switched from making ceramics to porcelain during the Bunka period (1804-1818). He became famous for his many technical innovations in porcelain production. His son-in-law Kawamoto Hanusuke V (1831-1907) and his son Kawamoto Hanusuke VI (1844-1905) continued the work of his master and developed the production of porcelain for export.  Kawamoto Hanusuke VI (1844-1905) in 1881, together with his brother-in-law, now known as Kawamoto Masukichi, opened the Seto Jikosha brand which also promoted its products at the World Fairs in Europe. The works of the Kawamoto Hanusuke family can be found in many museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Seto - Gura Museum in Japan.
