Object description :

"Renaissance Gold Ring With A Salamander. Western Europe, 16th Century."
A Renaissance gold ring with a Salamander.

Western Europe, 16th century.

Ring size K UK / 5 US and weighs 2.1 grams.

Salamanders were believed to have the ability to withstand fire, which is why they became a symbol of immortality, rebirth and passion.

In Renaissance courtly etiquette, this gift of a ring with a salamander would have symbolised a suitors burning desire.

Salamanders hibernate in dark, moist areas, such as piles of rotting wood and logs. When wood was placed upon a fire, Salamanders would miraculously appear from within the flames. Benvenuto Cellini (c.1500–1571) famously recalled experiencing this event as a child in his autobiography.

The symbol of the Salamander was adopted as a livery by King Francis of France (reigned c.1515 - 1547).
