Antoine-claude Fleury (1743-1822) - The Origin Of Painting
Antoine-Claude Fleury (1743-1822).
The origin of painting.
Oil on canvas.
Exhibited at the Salon in 1808.
This painting is based on the myth of Dibutade by which the Greeks counted the invention of drawing: it is by tracing the shadow cast by the silhouette of the loved one that Dibutade would have invented drawing, which would then have evolved into sculpture and painting.
The subject, the composition as well as the pictorial touch have allowed the attribution of this painting to Claude-Antoine Fleury, whose preparatory drawing was sold at Artcurial in 2020.
A student of Jean-Baptiste Regnault, the artist exhibited at the Salon from 1795 to 1822, he is known for his mythological and genre scenes. The booklet of the Salon of 1808 indicates that he exhibited a canvas entitled "The origin of painting", it is most probably our canvas.
