Pierre Thevenin is a painter born in Gray on March 9, 1905 into a family of musicians. Thevenin took classes at the Lyon Conservatory and in 1923 obtained a first prize for cello. A semi-self-taught painter, he exhibited in 1928 at the Salon du Sud-Est while pursuing his career as a musician. From 1932 his contracts as a cellist in the orchestras of the great ocean liners forced him to travel the world. From these many trips (Italy, Morocco, Africa, Southeast Asia) he brings back like any "traveling painter" sketches, sketches but also more accomplished works where the variety of landscapes and types seen here is declined with surprising ease. where there. Returning to Lyon in 1936 where he settled more permanently, he continued his career as a musician with the Lyon National Radio Broadcasting Orchestra but left it a few years later to better devote himself to his work as a painter. Tempted by mural painting, he was entrusted by the State with a vast decoration for the grand staircase of the University's moldings museum where, through five large compositions, he willingly gave in to contemporary themes; however it is towards a more intimate painting that he will evolve: portraits, landscapes where sometimes passes a dazzling line and color which reveals the influence of Jean Puy.
