Japan, Edo period (1603-1868) Statue of Buddha in black lacquered wood and partly gilded. Depicted seated in front of a mandorla on a stepped base supporting a lotus, hands in samadhi mudra, dressed in a monastic robe with flowing pleats, serene face, half-closed eyes, hair in ringlets and covering the ushnisha.
