Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 38.5 x 35.5 cm
Jacques-Philippe Caresme is an 18th century French painter famous for his bacchanal scenes with nymphs and satyrs. He was admitted to the Academy in 1766 and exhibited at the Salons between 1767 and 1777. Our artist was inspired by Greek and Roman mythology by painting a light scene in an idealized nature. It represents an aulos player, a double reed flute, accompanied by two seated musicians holding a tambourine. In the foreground, a bacchante and a young satyr dance to the rhythm of the music.
