It was at Lycée Condorcet in Paris that he met Édouard Vuillard, with whom he formed a deep friendship and whose sister he married, as well as Maurice Denis and Lugné-Poe. In 1889, while attending the Académie Julian, the group of nabis was formed, of which he would become one of the eminent representatives under the nickname of "bucolic nabi".
