He was born in Prague into a family of hatters. He studied from 1851 in preparation for the Prague Academy and in 1854-1855 at the Max Haushofer landscape school. In 1864 he moved to Vienna. Here, in 1871, he married Josef Procházková and had eight children with her. Of these, son Fritz and daughter Leopoldina showed artistic talent and studied in their father's workshop. Fritz then graduated from the Vienna Academy.
