Jacques-François-Joseph Swebach (Metz 1769 - 1823 Paris)

A military encampment, with an extensive landscape beyond

Oil on the canvas signed and dated lower left: Swebach 1804.

This painting gives a glimpse into daily life at a French military base. Jacques François Joseph Swebach-Desfontaines is best known for his historic paintings of the French Revolution and for his grand compositions of battles and military campaigns. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1791. In 1810 he was awarded the Grand Prix for his painting The Passage of the Danube by Napoleon before the Battle of Wagram.

In 2018, the Museum of the Revolution bought one of its paintings "Horse Market" 1793.
