Rare and important cabinet in marquetry of different wood species and green tinted wood.
It opens with a fall front revealing drawers of various sizes on three registers as well as three doors revealing compartments.
The rich marquetry decoration includes birds, foliage scrolls, scrolls, geometric patterns, architectural elements, ruins and plant ornaments. The cabinetmaker draws his inspiration from Lorenz Stoer's book "Geometria et perspectiva" published in 1567, many engravings of which show different similar elements.
The decoration on the top presents musical instruments in a leafy frame.
The brass and acid-etched iron locks typical of southern Germany contribute to the preciousness of the whole.
The entry of engraved and gilded iron locks as well as the twisted carrying handles on the sides complete the decor.

Very good state of conservation
Augsburg, Southern Germany, early 17th century.

Dimensions: height: 53 cm, width: 70 cm, depth: 37 cm

The cabinets in marquetry of colored native woods are typical of the regions of Augsburg, Tyrol and Innsbruck and continue to fascinate art lovers.
Originally designed for wealthy collectors, intended to adorn cabinets of curiosities (private museums), they were used to store and display works of art (medals, coins, statuettes, corals and shells).
Several names relate to their decor, whether “with wild grass”, “with ruins” or “with views of Jerusalem (certain foliage evoking palm trees)”, there are also hunting or allegorical versions.
