Camille Roqueplan is one of the masters of painting in the Provence region at the start of the 19th century. After his formative years in Marseille, then in Paris in the workshops of Baron Gros and Abel de Pujol, he was recognized during his lifetime as a very fine artist, painter, draughtsman and lithographer, capable of exploring all genres with elegance and precision.

This delicate watercolour, certainly created on the motif, can be compared, in its overall harmony, with the Landscape of Val-Fleury, a painting exhibited at the Salon in 1836 and now kept in the Musée Condé in Chantilly. The words of Théophile Gautier on the art of Roqueplan feel very accurate when he evokes “this perfect intelligence of color which has never failed him”. Roqueplan was a friend and an admirer of Paul Huet and Richard Parkes Bonington, among others.

The work on paper is in good condition. The lower right corner shows a trace of crease, which does not disturb the clarity of the watercolor.
