A Suite Of Louis XVI Beechwood Seat Furniture Late 18th Century Circa 1785-1788.

Set of three cabriolet armchairs in carved, molded and waxed beechwood from the Louis XVI period. Of very innovative shape, this model of seat appeared in 1785; imagined by Georges Jacob Bourguignon for the private furniture of the queen Marie-Antoinette for Saint-Cloud. Two characteristics prevail; on the side of the backrest, this one is constituted by a crosspiece crowning it, whose amounts slightly move away. It draws two ascending curves that stop a low arched pediment; this atypical arrangement will be said to be a hat by the cabinet des modes in 1786. The other innovation consists in the replacement of the armrest support by a vertical baluster. In fact, the armrests with cuffs of our armchairs no longer rest on arm supports but on swollen balusters fluted at the level of the front foot. The base remains in the typical Greek style. This one is made of four legs, each of them is tapered, fluted and vertical. The front leg is joined to the baluster by a high vertical stop, also fluted. Balance, nervousness, elegance, finesse and quality are the most appropriate terms for this suite of three chairs. It is worth noting the great care given to the connecting elements of impeccable quality. The new architectural characteristics that come to associate with the old ones, that they improve with happiness by modernizing this elegant suite of seats of which in particular; their backs in hat, the embossing of the armrests as well as the substitution of the supports of arm of vertical balustrex allow to fix the dating of this Parisian work in the years 1785-1788.
