ROMAIN Steppe is a Belgian painter of landscapes and seascapes. Encouraged by E. Van Hoorde, professor at the Antwerp Academy, to choose an artistic career, he followed the teaching of the painter Boland, then of I Meyers with whom he painted in Hamme, Zandvliet and Sint-Amands (1880 -1890). Belongs to the Plein Air School of Klein-Brabant. Worked mainly on the banks of the Scheldt and the North Sea, on views of harbours, boats and realistic-impressionist landscapes with the most varied effects, which he produced on paper (many sketches), canvas, wood panel or even on ivory. Friend of E. Verhaeren, he stayed regularly in Sint-Amands. Exhibited mainly in Antwerp from 1888 and then acquired a certain reputation abroad. Member of Als Ik Kan (Dictionary of Belgian Painters).
