Watercolor by Léon Girardet Coming from a Swiss Huguenot family of artists, painters and engravers for three generations, Léon Girardet was born in Paris in 1856. He had a twin brother, Jules Girardet, illustrator and painter3. He is also the brother of Eugène Girardet (1853-1907), also an orientalist painter. Léon Girardet is admitted to the School of Fine Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889). He made his first trip to Algeria accompanied by his parents during the winter of 1878-1879. A fragile young man, the doctors hope that he will benefit from the clemency of the Algerian winter. He returned to Algeria in 1880 with his brothers Eugène and Jules. He died in 1895 in Neuilly-sur-Seine leaving watercolors and oil paintings.
