"J-a Berthelot De Pléneuf, Marquise De Prie. Vers 1720. Jb Van Loo (atelier)"
Superb portrait of Jeanne-Agnès Berthelot de Pléneuf Marquise de Prie (1698-1727) that could be by Jean-Baptiste Van Loo or his workshop, painter from Aix. It was after a stay in Italy that he went to Paris, solicited for the quality of his works, including the very fashionable portraits. He arrived around 1720 at the court of the Regent Philippe d'Orleans, approved as a portrait painter and satisfied there with fine commissions. The Marquise is painted at this time magnificently dressed and hairstyle, the right arm folded and raising a finger high, the knowing air, a large parakeet with green tail resting on her left hand, looking at her. A very lively portrait against a background of turbulent trees and a shaded gray sky. The Marquise de Prie had returned from her husband's embassy in Turin. Become an important and influential character at the court of the Regent and Louis XV minor, she was one of the models of the painter who produced the portrait which has become famous. Mistress of Prince Louis IV Henri de Condé, head of the government of the Regency, she exercised major political influence at court, favored the marriage of King Louis XV with Marie Leczynska and organized its ceremonies. It was after the death of the Regent (1723) that her presence at court was rejected, object of vengeance to the point of being asked to return to her land where she died young and very ill (1727). -Portrait having belonged to Henriette Guillaume> (de la Vieuville) (1685-1727) name worn on the left facade. -Portrait oil on canvas in perfect condition in its gilded carved wooden frame, also in perfect condition. Dimensions: Overall: Height: 89 cm - Width: 76 cm View: Height: 72.5 cm - Width: 57.5 cm.
