The company of Val d'Osne is an art foundry created in 1835 by Jean Pierre Victor André, inventor of ornamental cast iron. Originally created to manufacture street furniture and decorative cast iron, this company very quickly became the most important production of art casting in France under the name of “Val d'Osne art foundry”. His nephew, Hippolyte André (1826-1891) took over the management of the company on the death of his uncle. The foundry has set up its workshops in Val d'Osne in Haute Marne. Its head office as well as its exhibition store were then located at 58 boulevard Voltaire in Paris. In full swing, it absorbs several competing establishments including Barbezat and Ducel. It is regularly rewarded during the various exhibitions of the products of French industry (1834: bronze medal, 1839 silver medal, 1844 and 1845: gold medals). The Val d'Osne company also participates in numerous Universal Exhibitions. We must remember the 1851 exhibition in London at the Crystal Palace, which gave the Val d'Osne company international recognition: the monumental art castings were then highlighted in this gigantic glass nave. She will also participate in the Universal Exhibition of 1855 in Paris, of 1875 in Santiago, of 1879 in Melbourne, of 1878 (Grand prize and two gold medals), 1889 (out of competition and member of the jury) and 1900 (out of competition and member of the jury) in Paris. Present at the Universal Exhibition of 1900, the Fonderie d'Art du Val d'Osne designed the same year, (and in very different styles), the four large gilded bronze sets of the Pont Alexandre III and the Art Nouveau surrounds designed by Hector Guimard for the Paris metro.
