Described as a child who couldn't read nor write. He was Hydrocéphalic.
At the age of seven,he started to paint on cigarboxes, small landscapes that witness a remarkable virtuosity in its sketchiness and choice of monochrome brown and bleu colors.
After his death, his father edited two books of Fritz's work, engraved by his sister and father:

Cent eaux-fortes gravées par J. Van de Kerkhove d'après les tableaux de Frédéric Van de Kerkhove, mort en 1873 à l'âge de 10 ans et 11 mois, P., A. Lévy, 1877
