Beautiful and large work of the Arlésien painter, Jean-Roch Isnard who represents a fisherman on the canal in the hamlet of Mas-Thibert near 'Arles. One can distinguish on the bank of the canal a traditional fisherman's hut as well as a rider on the stone bridge.
The work has succeeded in faithfully and finely transcribing the vegetation of the Arles region.
The work was most certainly painted, in situ, on the spot, in Mas-Thibert where the artist moved with his family in 1880.
In 1882, the artist presented at the Salon a work entitled "Fisherman's cabin in Mas-Thibert ", it could be our painting or a work with a similar subject.
Born in Arles in 1845, Jean Roch Isnard was drawn to painting very early on. In 1854, his family left Arles to settle in Marseille where he became a student of the painter Emmanuel Coulange-Lautrec. He exhibited his first paintings in 1862 at the Marseille Salon and made decorations for Marseille businesses. In 1867, the family returned to settle in Arles, a grant from the city allowed the artist to go to the Beaux-Arts in the city of Paris, in the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme.
Jean Roch Isnard and his family left Salon de Provence at the beginning of 1880, for the hamlet of Mas Thibert where his wife's mother resides. Before leaving the city, he painted a portrait of Félibre Antoine Blaise Crousillat which he took with him.
His works are kept in various museums in France in Arles, Avignon, Saint Rémy de Provence, Béziers .. and abroad such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
