"Attributed To Carel Van Falens (1683-1733), Convoy Attacked By Horsemen In A Landscape"
Large painting from the 18th century, representing a convoy attacked by riders in a river landscape, work attributed to Carel van Falens. The fight begins, a gunshot sounds, the attack on the convoy attacked by riders begins and this is how we discover the foreground of our painting. However, despite the reality of this brutal melee where riders and mounts are destined for a merciless jousting, the scene revolves around a river where life seems to take its course. We thus find scenes of daily life, composed of fishermen's boats and grouping of peasants. On the artistic level, our painting echoes the period of the 17th century, where artists were inspired by years of unrestrained combat, to illustrate their compositions of heroic feeling and thus to set them up as the theater of a romantic epic. The remarkable work of our painting in terms of its harmony, pictorial details, bright and vibrant colors and textures, is reminiscent of the works of the Dutch painter Philips Wouwerman. Carel Van Falens is known for being inspired by Wouwerman's style and will transpose it to the 18th century. Nevertheless, the influence of his time at the court of Regent Philippe d'Orléans and later of Louis XV after he emigrated to Paris at the age of 20, should not be underestimated and certainly played a role. role in the development of his personal talent. The delicacy of the light and the delicacy of the colors contribute to a finished work. Our painting dates from the 18th century, around 1730. Work attributed to Carel van Falens. It is presented in a beautiful golden frame with canals and palm leaves, from the 19th century. Oil on canvas (98.5 cm x 81 cm) and its frame (118.5 cm x 98.5 cm). Literature Carel Van Falens began his artistic career by working as an apprentice for the horse painter Constance Francken and was then accepted at the Saint Luc Academy in Paris in 1705 or 1706. The work he submitted for entry to the Academy was a Hunting Scene, which was later hung by academicians in a position of honor in the Assembly Hall, which therefore illustrated how much they considered this work. During the Regency, the Duke of Orleans commissioned Van Falens to restore some of his paintings and following the death of the Duke, he was appointed Ordinary Painter to King Louis XV in 1724. In November of the same year, he was admitted to the Royal Academy, however unfortunately this was cut short when, in 1733, he died in his apartment in the Louvre at the age of 49.
