He is the son of the sculptor François Dumont and the father of the sculptor Jacques-Edme Dumont. He received his first lessons from his father François Dumont and was admitted to the Academy in 1768, with his reception piece Milon de Crotone. He married Marie Berthault who gave him a son, the sculptor Jacques-Edme Dumont.
