A truly first-rate piece, produced within the circle of the Sèvres porcelain factory, most likely originating from a high-level Parisian workshop such as Dihl & Guérhard, Dagoty, or Nast, active at the end of Louis XVI's reign and immediately after the Revolution. The entire piece is hand-decorated with finely painted, unique floral bouquets in shades of gray, linked by delicate mauve ribbons and garlands of gilded foliage, against a white background. The exceptional quality of the clay, the exquisite delicacy of the decoration, the perfect mastery of the monochrome technique, as well as the elegant and flawlessly applied gilding, attest to a work of the highest quality, characteristic of the finest Parisian productions of the late 18th century, in the style and tradition of Sèvres.
The shape, typical of the Louis XVI style, is distinguished by:
a slightly scalloped circular stand,
a high-footed bowl with a slightly flattened hemispherical cup,
large, understated, and well-balanced handles,
and a slightly concave, truncated conical lid surmounted by a gilt finial.
Of note: the painter's signature is engraved with a stylus under the piece, a practice known on certain very high-quality Parisian porcelains at the end of the 18th century, particularly from workshops close to Sèvres.
Attribution
Based on the quality of its execution, the controlled richness of its decoration, its formal elegance, and its perfectly mastered Louis XVI style, this bowl can be attributed to a leading Parisian manufacturer working within the direct circle of Sèvres, around 1785–1795 (Dihl & Guérhard, Dagoty, Nast, or a similar workshop). The absence of a mark with the interlaced double Ls is not incompatible with this type of production: some very high-end porcelains, made outside of regular series, may have been delivered without an apparent mark, as is attested for certain Parisian pieces of the period.
