Montparnasse Frame In Carved And Patinated Wood Around 1940
Montparnasse frames were born at the beginning of the 20 th century to respond to the new currents of painting brought in by painters qualified as "modern". Probably initially, an artist will have chosen to repaint a classic frame in tones more in keeping with those of his painting. The Montparnasses were born (by ricochet this term which already designated the painters living and frequenting this district under the nickname of "Montparnaux" will extend to the executives born in the same place). The principle suggested to the framers, they did not delay to improve its presentation and style even if the latter boils down to the two main ones: louis XIV style frames (sometimes also Louis XV) and 17th century Italian frames (known as "à Cassetta". So despite the abandonment of gilding, amateurs could still cling to classic and reassuring landmarks. Skillful techniques of superimposing layers of paint later "scraped" and revealing: yellow of naples, red ocher, black and taupe beige are one of the many shades that make up the palette. This is the case with our frame, whose generous sculpture inspired by a stylized Italian model is covered with a patina m arron, enameled with golden touches.
