This ceremonial paddle "raivavae" is superbly decorated with a complex decoration, entirely incised with geometric patterns in the shape of a cross encrusted in squares and half-moons covering the whole of it. The engraved decor is of very good quality. The handle is carved with eight heads of "Tiki" distributed in crown in the classic position of the goddess Arununa. Originally, these paddles were to be used for dances and ritual ceremonies and were to appear as an object of prestige. From the 1840s, the production of this type of paddle increased to be sold to travelers and passing sailors.
