Equestrian Statue Of Louis XIV In Bronze, After Pierre Cartellier And Louis Petitot. Nineteenth Century
A French equestrian statue of Louis XIV in patinated bronze, after a model by Pierre Cartellier (1757-1831) and Louis Petitot (1794-1862) erected at Versailles in 1836 on the request of Louis-Philippe. It rests on a ebonised wooden rectangular base. This composition represents Louis XIV as a Roman emperor but wearing an abundant curly wig. The king rides a passing horse, that is to say, in the attitude of the march. The work is inspired by the antique equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius of the Capitol in Rome, a reference in this area. The king wears the mantle and the stick of command; he embodies the sovereign authority: the straight bust, looking far away, he stretches his right hand in an imperious gesture. This effigy of the king imposes by a classical majesty worthy of the antique. Work of the late nineteenth century. Very good state of conservation. Total height: 37 cm X Total width: 23.5 cm X Total depth: 15 cm
