Large Glazed Terracotta Vase, China, 19th Century

This large baluster-shaped vase takes us through a Chinese landscape from the end of the 19th century. Under the blue glaze, a poetic setting opens the way through the mountain in which figures walk among houses arranged very close to a lake.

This poetic decoration evokes the Chinese shanshui, calligraphy representing natural landscapes where rock and water are present, motifs still appreciated under the Qing dynasty, when our vase was created.

Along the neck, note the traditional fins. Some discreet lacks including one under the base.
