Marco de Gastyne studied painting in his youth and won the prize from Rome in 1911. He stayed at the Villa Medicis from 1911 to 1913. His career as a painter was very brief. He then turned to the Seventh Art and made his first film in 1922. This work in the light and the symbolist atmosphere was realized in 1917, shortly after his return from Italy.
