French school of the XVIIth century, follower of Valentin of Boulogne. SOLD WITH A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. The fortune-teller, oil on wood surrounded by a Carlo Maratta frame carved and gilt wood decorated with ribbons and acanthus leaves at sight (Italy XVIIth century, 52cm x 67cm). The subject of this painting is taken from the comic register of the "stolen thief". While the thief disguises the gypsy of her hen, the girl of this hen robs the thief of his purse. The two simultaneous larcenies occur on the same horizontal plane, but they remain completely disconnected in the logic of the story: the little girl does not seek to avenge her mother since she does not see that it is being stolen. This painting is a version of the painting of Valentin de Boulogne, the famous French Caravaggio. It is located in Toledo (Ohio) in the Museum of Art (inv. 1985.53). Valentine of Boulogne, known as Valentine, whose real name is Jean Valentin, born on 3 January 1591 in Coulommiers and died on 19 August 1632 in Rome. We are, probably here, in front of a workshop replica given the quality of the painting, although the composition here is more airy than that of the Master. Two identical paintings are to be attached to the Calvet Museum in Avignon and the Smith College Museum of Art in Northampton, Mass.
