Saint Jerome Round Dish, 24 Cm
A glass rondel painted in grisaille and silver yellow.
The main scene depicts a saint at his writing desk, engrossed in study or writing a book, set against a Gothic backdrop reminiscent of a study.
At his feet lies a lion, the attribute associated with Saint Jerome; the book he is studying is therefore the Bible. Saint Jerome is known as the translator of the Scriptures (the Vulgate).
During the 19th century, the revival of stained-glass art was accompanied by a renewed interest in ancient religious compositions, figures with halos, Gothic architecture, and traditional glass-painting techniques.
