View Of The Cathedral Of Palermo - Karl Kaufmann, 1873
The painting is an oil on poplar panel and is signed "CHARLES MARCHAND 1873" in the lower left corner
Karl Kaufmann was an Austrian painter of the late 19th century, known for his extraordinary ability to blend academic technique with romantic sensibility in his depictions of landscapes, cityscapes, and historical scenes. His works, often signed with various pseudonyms, reflect a balance between Central European tradition and a fascination with Italian, Venetian, and Eastern scenes that captivated Europe at the time
Karl Kaufmann was born in 1843 in Neplachowitz, Austrian Silesia (today Neplachovice, Czech Republic). He was a student at the Vienna Academy. His travels in Northern Europe (Norway), the Netherlands, Germany (Franconia, Danzig, Königsberg), and frequently in Italy (Naples, Rome, Venice) provided him with the subjects for his numerous landscapes, including a considerable number of views of Venice.[citation needed]
From 1900 onward, Kaufmann lived permanently in Vienna. He died on April 27, 1905, in Vienna.
