Art Deco ring in 18-karat gold, adorned with vintage brilliant-cut diamonds set in silver, as well as square-cut Verneuil synthetic rubies set in gold. These rubies are among the first synthetic gemstones produced in the early 1900s.

French chemist Auguste Verneuil developed this revolutionary technique in the late 19th century and presented it in 1902. Stones produced using this process are still very commonly found in vintage and retro jewelry.

Why do they have bubbles?

During manufacturing, powdered aluminum oxide is sprayed through an extremely hot oxyhydrogen flame, exceeding 2,000 °C. The molten droplets then crystallize in successive layers on a rotating substrate. When the flame contains too much oxygen, microscopic gas bubbles can become trapped in the material as it cools rapidly.

Synthetic ruby:

The term “synthetic” means that the stone was produced in a laboratory. Its chemical composition (Al₂O₃) and crystal structure are identical to those of natural ruby, and its fundamental physical properties are virtually the same. Ruby is the red variety of corundum; its color is primarily due to chromium.

The difference between a natural ruby and a synthetic ruby lies primarily in their origin and how they were formed. A synthetic ruby is a genuine ruby—not an imitation—but it is created in a laboratory.
