Alfred Magne, *floral Composition*, Oil On Canvas, 1880

Artist: Alfred Magne (1855-1936)

Alfred Magne (1855–1936), floral arrangement, oil on canvas, 1880

Large oil on canvas signed by Alfred Magne, depicting a spring floral arrangement featuring branches of yellow mimosa, clusters of mauve and white lilacs, and large red, pink, and dark purple anemones with dark centers.

The flowers are arranged in an antique earthenware coffee pot with a ribbed body, adorned with a polychrome floral design, and featuring two sinuous handles. In the foreground, a bouquet of violets and several branches of mimosa rest on the table.

The composition combines the reds and purples of the anemones with the luminous yellow of the mimosa, set against a golden ochre background. The loose, visible brushwork—particularly in the rendering of the petals—links this still life to Impressionist painting.

Alfred Magne (1855–1936), a French painter of flowers and still lifes, exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon.

Original oil on canvas, signed lower left, presented in its substantial antique frame with gilded wood and gilded composition, decorated with foliage motifs, and featuring a cartouche bearing the name “MAGNE.”

Good condition; see photos. Dimensions: canvas 65 × 49 cm; with frame 90 × 70 cm. Art supply store “À la Palette de Rubens,” located at 4 Rue de Seine in Paris.
