Important Period Directoire-era Armchair In Solid Mahogany, Attributed To Jacob
Artist: Georges Jacob
An elegant and rare Directoire-period bergère chair in solid mahogany, molded and finely carved, attributed to Jacob, late 18th century. This chair, a fine example of Parisian craftsmanship, is a perfect illustration of the “Etruscan” style pioneered by the painter Hubert Robert and the architects Percier and Fontaine, and popularized by the workshops of the famous Jacob dynasty. The straight, rectangular backrest slopes slightly to provide great seating comfort. The frame is distinguished by the exceptional quality of its carvings on solid mahogany. The upturned armrests are topped by powerful volute scrolls, centered with radiating geometric rosettes and accented by cascading stylized foliage with deep, bold veins. The baluster-style armrests feature a gadrooned decoration, encircled by molded bands executed with great precision. The straight, clean-lined waistband is flanked by connecting blocks carved with floral rosettes blooming in high relief. The base consists, at the front, of tapered legs adorned with fine fluting and ending in small cleats. The similar rear legs feature the so-called “saber-shaped” curve, typical of late 18th-century Parisian neoclassical furniture.
This virtuoso carving and the architectural precision of the seat allow for a direct attribution to the work of Georges Jacob (who became a master craftsman in 1765) or the Jacob Frères workshop (1796–1803).
This bergère features high-quality traditional panel upholstery, reupholstered with a feather cushion and covered in embossed velvet with a geometric lattice pattern in cream and beige tones, finished with matching trim.
Good original condition, with a warm patina from the antique burnished varnish.
