Japanese Satsuma Ceramic Vase – Rakan, With Gold Moriage Decoration
Japanese Satsuma Ceramic Vase – Rakans, Gold Moriage Decoration
Decorative Japanese vase in the Satsuma style, richly adorned with figurative paintings and gold accents. Its surface is covered with a thin crackled glaze, characteristic of Satsuma ceramics. A detailed scene depicting Rakans (Arhats)—Buddhist saints and disciples of the Buddha—unfolds around the entire circumference. The figures are depicted in richly adorned robes against a backdrop of a mountainous landscape. The decoration is enhanced by raised gold details and the moriage technique. The upper part of the vase is adorned with a wide frieze featuring geometric and floral motifs in shades of gold, blue, and pale pink. The piece stands out for the richness of its decorative details and the precision of its craftsmanship. The vase is not signed on the underside. Japan, probably the first third of the 20th century.
