Charles Samson uses here the engraving technique known as “drypoint” (named after the tool used), which is similar to intaglio printmaking, that is, engravings made by carving into metal. The tool used does not carve deep grooves, but rather scratches the surface of the metal plate, allowing for a delicate intaglio design that resembles a pencil sketch.
