Charles Samson uses here the engraving technique known as “drypoint” (named after the tool used), which is similar to—that is, intaglio engravings on metal. The tool does not carve deep grooves, but rather scratches the surface of the metal plate, allowing for a delicate, recessed design that resembles a pencil sketch.
