History Of The Church—1820–1828—berault Bercastel—18 Volumes
The Gauthier Frères Edition brings together Bérault-Bercastel’s original work (which originally ended in 1720), revised, corrected, and supplemented with a significant historical continuation.
- The volumes covering the latter part of the work extend the historical narrative from the year 1720 through the pontificate of Leo XII (who died in 1829). It thus encompasses the entire 18th century and the period of the French Revolution.
- The Rise of the Enlightenment: The work describes with great severity the influence of 18th-century philosophers (Voltaire, Rousseau), whom it accuses of seeking to destroy the foundations of the faith and the Church.
- The Jansenist Crisis and the papal bull Unigenitus: The theological and political tensions that shook the Church in France during the first half of the century are described in great detail.
- The Suppression of the Jesuits: The history traces the gradual dismantling of the Society of Jesus across various European monarchies, culminating in its suppression by Pope Clement XIV in 1773.
- The French Revolution: The narrative culminates with the traumatic events of the end of the century: the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, the persecution of refractory priests, and dechristianization.
