17th-century Tapestry
Tapestry (3 m x 2 m) from the early 17th century, without its original backing, depicting in the foreground women and maids bustling about a newborn baby. One of them holds the baby—the future Virgin Mary—over a basin to give her her first bath, while others prepare to wrap her in swaddling clothes.
At the top right of the composition, in the background, a figure can be seen lying in a four-poster bed beneath large, drawn curtains. This is Saint Anne, the mother of Mary, resting after giving birth.
