Antique Painting Copy From Pierre Mignard Jesus On The Road To Calvary
Oil on canvas.
The work is a replica of the painting created by Pierre Mignard and gifted to Louis XIV, which is now housed at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
The dramatic scene is set just outside the walls of Jerusalem; a procession of people accompanies Jesus on his ascent to Calvary, which can be glimpsed in the background on the right, with the crosses of the two thieves already erected.
Christ’s cross, however, is carried by Simon of Cyrene, compelled by the guards after Jesus’s umpteenth fall; Jesus is roughly urged to rise with a whip.
Walking in front of Christ are the two thieves, bound and accompanied by several servants; on the left is the group of devout women who accompany and support Mary, who is overcome with grief.
In contrast to this group, on the right is another group of women from the crowd, who watch with pity and compassion, turning their young children’s gaze away from the terrible spectacle.
The background landscape is rugged and barren, beneath a sky growing heavy with gray, gloomy clouds.
The work was restored and re-painted in the mid-20th century and mounted on a new stretcher.
It is presented in a period-style frame.
